I love reading you but I truly can't afford any more paid subscriptions and am discontinuing a number of ones I've had annual subs too. I need to l shave many hundreds of expenses per month now . I'm sorry! Fighting to survive as a single old lady is pretty harsh these days.
I certainly empathize with all the writers trying to make a living at this, but as a senior with a set budget I can only subscribe to a few. I grew up with magazines and newspapers where you bought all the writing and editing they provided, not each individual author. I can not imagine the frustration in trying to be seen, let alone trying to carve a living wage out of today’s world but I can’t deal with having to pay for each essay.
I have too many subscriptions and am canceling some great ones. But I pay for the few I love. You all need to consolidate and make a minimum fee mandatory. Or do ads with ethical companies?
Similar to YouTube, I would be interested to include ads into my content — IF(!!!) I can position them within the content in a non-disruptive way AND choose the advertiser based on who I can stand behind.
Edit: I should note that I’d prefer to take money out of corporate pockets, rather than hoping someone who’s weighing every dollar, contemplates whether they can sustain a paid subscription.
While I manage to innovate here and there, my paid subs are declining overall also. For the same reason.
On top of which, I run into the same problem I always have: I cannot play in anyone else's sand box. I am always told someone else is the "expert." Some other Substacker has the "bigger platform" or the "credential" or the "pedigree." It is always the way in Smart America. Which I have complained about extensively in my own space, so I won't do it here.

Well wouldn't you know, It was!!
Because Substack just wrote an article on her yesterday. The difference is:
When we bitch about suppression or other fuckery, we don't get the actual platform attempting to reinvigorate our stream of new subscriptions in direct a write-up.. Much less promoting us out like we're Andrew Tate.
No and personally when I complain I see further suppression...
Also, this comment gets a bit less impact because of our inability to comment images now on articles. Yet another kind of pissing me off..
